Research Director of the Ajou Institute for Unification Han Ki-ho emphasized the importance of the U.N. body’s decision given the current uncertainty among North Korean human rights groups caused by the Trump administration’s decision to suspend foreign aid and freeze funds for the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), as well as withdraw from the UNHCR.
“U.S. contributions to the U.N. are absolute, and while the U.S. decision to withdraw from the U.N. Human Rights Council may lead to some negative trends, it is important to note that the core value of human rights, as outlined in the preamble of the U.N. charter, cannot be shaken, and this was publicly declared in the form of the consensus,” Han told NK News.
